Tips to remember while in the exam

- In this paper, you are tested on lexis and syntax, and the way words combine with others to form phrases.
- Pay attention to the title first and then read the whole text, so you understand its general meaning.
- Re-read the whole text at least 2 times.
- Do not look at the answer choices just yet!
- If at first glance you should instinctively recognise that the gap requires a certain form of vocabulary or grammar structure, fill it in quickly on the same question sheet and continue reading. Trust and follow your grammatical instinct here.
- Focus on each gap as they come up and think about what the missing word is before you look at the options. Any ideas come to mind?
- Look at the form of speech in each gap that is missing.
- Decide whether the gap should take an adjective, noun, verb, etc. Also see if the word needs to be in a positive/negative form, singular/plural, active/passive, stative/dynamic, et cetera.
- After having read the whole text twice, look back over the answer choices given (a, b, c, d) and see which one best fits the gap.
- Look at each option (a, b, c, d) and your understanding of each option and its meaning and use in context.
- Check that the word you choose matches the syntax and/or lexical context.
- Look to see if it sounds good too!
- If you realise that a gap requires a certain form of vocabulary or grammatical structure, use it.
- As for making any mistakes/errors on the answer sheet: any trace of lead from your pencil, not rubbed out completely can be traced by the correcting machine which checks your answers. So rub out, as best you can, any errors!
- If two answers are present in this part, both answers will be count as zero. Rub out the one you do not want, and rub it out good!
- Don’t leave any blank boxes. Make a good educated guess at least!
- Answer all questions. You don’t lose points for incorrect answers.

The following guide/formula, paraphrased from Sherlock Holmes’ precept - Sherlock Holmes in The Sign of the Four (Doubleday p. 111) is employed in this exam part:

YY-XY-YX-XX where X = True and Y = False

When you eliminate what you know to be untrue or not stated (YY), or half true (XY), half false (YX), whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth (XX). The questions are not necessarily about choosing the right answers but eliminating what you know to be untrue.  © 1998 The FIRST Guru
