PAPER 1: Reading
General tips in the exam
- Read each text at least twice. Three times if you are not sure about what it is you have read.
- Read all of the texts from start to finish.
- Re-read each text in detail if the task question requires it.
- You have an average time of 20 minutes for each part.
- Do not spend more time than you have to on the first two parts.
- Try to complete parts 1 and 2 in around 10-12 minutes. This will leave you the necessary time for transferring your answers to the separate sheet 5 minutes from the end.
- The 3rd reading is by far the longest/hardest, so leave yourself more time for this part.
- You have to remember that your total time includes the transfer of answers to the separate answer sheet.
- Should you exceed your trained timing in any part of this test, leave your remaining unanswered questions for later on in the test if you have time to return to this part. You should be able to return later to finish that part.
- Use any extra time at the end to go back and deal with any problems/uncertainties/doubts in that unfinished part.
- When doing practice testing, you must learn to time yourself well and train yourself to finish the whole paper comfortably within the established time limits.
- You are allowed to write on the exam paper, so it is helpful to underline relevant parts of a text to help you locate answers.
- Write the question number you think may be relevant in the margin so that you can refer back to it quickly.
- Answer all 30 questions. You don’t lose points for incorrect answers.
- Once the reading has finished, you will have 5 minutes to transfer all your answers to the answer sheet.
- Once you have been instructed to finish, place your pens down quickly. If you fail to follow this instruction, you may be disqualified.
REMEMBER: When filling in your answers on the answer sheet, make sure to fill in your answers in this order so as to maximise your overall results:
Part 1: 8 questions – 16 points awarded
Part 3: 15 questions – 15 points awarded
Part 2: 7 questions – 14 points awarded
